This article introduces a series on comparing spatial patterns in raster data. It covers the motivation for such comparisons (studying change, similarity, association, and model assessment), general methodological considerations, and provides an inventory of techniques. The series will demonstrate practical implementation in R for both continuous and categorical raster data across overlapping and arbitrary regions.
