This technical article introduces spatial signatures as multi-value representations for describing patterns in categorical rasters, such as land cover data. It explains how to move beyond basic area measurements and landscape metrics to use co-occurrence matrices (coma) and vectors (cove) that compress information about spatial composition and configuration, allowing for direct comparison using distance measures.
